American company Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns the streaming app Max and the Eurosport station, has released some data on viewership of the Summer Olympics. The biggest sporting event of the year helped it gain a record number of new subscribers in Europe.

The company does not disclose details on the number of users in each country and only gives selected benchmarks. All streaming platforms are included in the aggregate figures, so in addition to Max, Discovery+, which is still operating in some markets.

"The total number of unique users of streaming platforms watching Paris 2024 has already surpassed the numbers from the last Summer Olympics in Tokyo after the second day of this year's Games," the company announced in a press release. "At the same time, the company has already surprisingly managed to break the previous record for retail subscriber acquisitions in a single day during the opening weekend," it boasted.

The number of streamed minutes of this year's Olympics combined on Max and Discovery+ nearly topped one billion. That's roughly seven times more than at the same point in the last Games in Tokyo. In absolute numbers, this is 75% of the streamed minutes recorded throughout the entirety of last summer's Olympics. Users are also spending significantly more time on Max and Discovery+, roughly 63% more than during the Tokyo Olympics.

Five times more users watch the Olympics on streaming platforms than during the Tokyo Olympics, which took place under strict anti-epidemic measures. The key to achieving these numbers was the launch of Max. Its users currently make up 80% of the audience. In terms of streaming platform viewership, Saturday 27 July was the highest ever.

Traffic to Eurosport's website has increased by more than 43% since the start of the Games. Eurosport's linear broadcasts in all relevant markets also attracted more viewers than in Tokyo. "Viewership is up 98% so far this year, bucking the negative trend of declining overall TV viewership seen in recent years," states a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery.

The company broadcasts the Olympics in a total of 50 markets in 19 languages.
