The most common source of information for Czechs and Czech women is online media and newspapers. 65% get information about events in the Czech Republic and the world from them. Compared to print media, this is six times more. SOCDEM voters are an exception in this respect, with 41% of them getting their information from printed newspapers and magazines, which is the highest compared to voters of other political parties and movements. The second most frequently used source is television (58%) and the third social networks and forums (35%), followed by radio (32%) by a smaller margin, according to research by NMS Research.
News in internet media is most often opened by ODS (86%), TOP 09 (82%) and SPD (82%) voters. Internet media perform best among young people, with 72% of 18-34 year olds using them.
"While the use of internet media does not differ much across generations, the share of television as a source of information increases with increasing age. 73% of baby boomers get their information from TV, which is 15 p.p. more compared to the average, and even 34 p.p. more compared to Generation Z," comments Lucie Režná from NMS Market Research.
Social networks and online forums are used as a source of information by 35% of people in the Czech Republic. The most frequent users of social networks are voters of Motorists for themselves (66%), PRO 2022 (50%) and Pirates (49%).
Among those who get information on social networks and online forums, Facebook clearly leads. 81% use it as a source of information. The exception is Generation Z, among whom Instagram dominates social networks as a source of information. For information from the world and the Czech Republic, 84% of young people aged 18-26 use Instagram as a source of information. In the general population, 44% of people use Instagram and 41% use YouTube.
Comparably, people in the Czech Republic use Tiktok (16%) and X (15%) as a source of information. These social networks are used more often by men compared to women.
1301 respondents took part in the online survey. The data collection was conducted on a representative sample of the 18+ population using an online survey from 4 to 9 October 2024. For more information, see here.
