AMERICAN ELECTION NIGHT HIT OVER A MILLION VIEWERS ON TV AND CNN PRIMA NEWS

At least three minutes of coverage of the U.S. presidential election results were sought by more than one million viewers on both news stations Tuesday night through Wednesday.

The American Election Night, which began airing after 20:00 on Tuesday, November 5 on Czech Television on CT24, was watched by an average of 63,000 adults 15+ with a 5.86% share by 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6. At least three minutes of this special was watched by 665 thousand viewers. The most watched time was around 22:50, when approximately 150 thousand viewers watched CT24. This is according to official data from ATO-Nielsen.

The viewership of the American election night was higher on CT than in 2020, because CT24 started broadcasting the election special after 8 pm, while four years ago it was only after 11 pm. Thus, at least three minutes of American Election Night were seen by 250,000 more viewers. The comparable 11pm-6am segment received similar numbers to four years ago.

The U.S. Votes for President special, coupled with a continuous broadcast of American Election Night, was also offered by CNN Prima News. It aired on Tuesdays at a comparable time from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. It averaged a viewership of 43,000 viewers over the age of 15 with a share of 3.99%. At least three minutes of the broadcast were watched by 425 thousand viewers. In the time between 1am and 5am, the share reached over 12% in the 15+ target group and even surpassed 18% in the most watched moments.

American Election Night on 5 November was followed by a special called USA Votes for President, which was simulcast on CT1 and CT24 from 6:00 to 9:00 on Wednesday 6 November. This special was watched on both channels by a total of 150 thousand adults 15+ with a share of 28.03%.

The Wednesday morning and mid-morning broadcasts on CNN Prima News from 6:00 to 10:00 were watched by an average of 61 thousand viewers aged 15+ at a share of 11%.

Although the election broadcasts brought increased audience shares to the news stations, there was not as much interest in the American elections in Czech society in general. According to research by the Resolution Group, published the day before election night, more than two-fifths of Czechs (43%) did not follow the election and a quarter did not even know who the two main candidates were. But the results also showed that those who knew the candidates were fairly clear about their views on Trump and Harris.
