TN AND UDÁLOSTI REMAIN THE MOST WATCHED TELEVISION NEWS
28. 1. 202528. 1. 2025TV news programmes remain at the top of the TV ratings. The most watched domestic news programmes are still Televizní noviny (Nova) and Události (Czech Television). This is according to the official TV viewership data of ATO-Nielsen for 2024.
The average viewership of Czech Television's main news programme Události, broadcast on CT1 and CT24, reached a cumulative 786,000 viewers over the age of 15 last year, with a share of 26.7%. At the January meeting of the Czech Television Council, the Director General of ČT Jan Souček commented that "Události is the only news programme that has managed to maintain the interest of viewers over the years". He demonstrated this by comparing the viewership of Události in 2024 and in 2010, noting that unlike its commercial competitors, Události's viewership in 2010 and 2024 was "virtually identical", reaching 790,000 viewers 14 years ago.
However, Televizní noviny remains the most watched TV news programme on TV Nova, which regularly ranks as the most watched programme on its broadcasts. This was also the case in 2024. Last year, Televizni noviny was watched by an average of 950,000 viewers over the age of 15, with a share of 31%. In the 15-54 audience group, to which Nova sells advertising, the share was 30.48%.
The third strongest is Hlavní zprávy, which is broadcast by the main channel TV Prima and also by the news station CNN Prima News. Last year, the main news was watched by an average of 540,000 viewers over the age of 15, with a share of 18.7%. Last year's Main News also ranked in the top ten of TV Prima's most watched programmes. In addition, the news station CNN Prima News has increased its market share every year since its launch in May 2020, and in 2024 it remained just below the two percent mark, reaching 1.97% in the 15+ audience group.
The decline in audience numbers for the main news programmes on commercial television, as discussed by the CT Director General, replicates the overall reduction in the number of viewers in front of the television screen on these stations that occurred between 2010 and 2024.
