More than half of the Czech online population watches movies several times a week - regardless of whether in the cinema or at home. Daily or almost daily 28% of people watch them, another 30% watch them several times a week. Around once a week, 22% of the population watches a film. Less regular viewing, i.e. once a fortnight to once a month, is reported by 12% of Czechs, 7% watch films even less often and only 1% do not watch films at all. This is according to research conducted by ResSolution Group on a representative sample of 1,000 respondents from the National Sample CZ internet population aged 15 and over.
In general, moviegoers most often choose movies based on genre (40% listed it among their top three factors) and current mood (39%). The theme of the film (28%) or the cast (26%) also play a significant role. Other less frequently mentioned factors are recommendations from close family (19%) and viewer ratings on film databases (17%).
In terms of the most significant differences between genders, men are slightly more likely than women to choose films based on genre or media reviews. Women, on the other hand, place more emphasis on the cast, the theme of the film or its current popularity. In terms of age, the youngest moviegoers are most likely to decide on a film to watch based on current mood (47% cited it as one of the top 3 factors) and as they get older, the importance of the cast or the tendency to watch what is currently on TV increases.
For the country of origin of films, half of viewers do not have a preference between Czech and foreign films. Those with a clearer preference are split fairly evenly between fans of both Czech and foreign films (25% vs. 26%). There are no significant differences in terms of gender, but in terms of age, older respondents were significantly more likely to say they had no preference for Czech/foreign films. Foreign films are significantly more likely to be preferred by youngest viewers up to 34 years of age (42%) - these respondents, on the other hand, prefer Czech films the least of all age groups. In the middle age group, preferences are again more or less equal, and Czech films win among the oldest group (32% of them prefer them).
In terms of film genres, comedy is the most popular among Czech viewers overall, with more than half of the respondents (55%) mentioning it in their top 3 genres. This is followed by crime/detective genre (27%) and action films (23%). The overall TOP 5 is rounded off by romance films (21%) and, with 18% of responses, documentaries, sci-fi and thrillers. On the other hand, the least popular are westerns and musicals (both 4%).
Men, compared to women, prefer action and science fiction genres in the Top 5 - women, on the other hand, prefer romantic films and fairy tales to a greater extent. The youngest respondents have a stronger preference for fantasy and sci-fi genres, for example, which feature in their Top 5 in contrast to other age groups, while older over 55 respondents are more likely to favour documentaries and historical films.

The majority of Czech viewers (67%) do not care about the results of film awards, whether the American Oscars or the Český lev. The results are more attractive to women than to men. The results of the Oscars interest a quarter of those surveyed, but there is a very similar interest in the Český lev, which captures the attention of more than a fifth of people. In terms of interest by age group, the Oscars are the clear winner in the youngest category under 34 (26% of respondents in this age group are interested in the Oscars, while only 14% are interested in the Český lev), while the middle category from 35 to 54 is interested in the and Czech Awards roughly equally (22% vs. 21%), and the oldest group over 55 years old have a flip in preferences and are slightly more attracted to Český lev (32%) than to the Oscars (26%).

The research is part of the Cultural Czechia research series, which in previous parts has looked at the areas of reading, music, museums and theatre. Its aim is to summarise in a clear way the relationship of Czechs to culture based on research data. It is freely downloadable here.
