In the second half of last year, 47% of Czechs aged 15–69 (i.e., approximately 3.1 million people) used at least one paid VOD service. On average, they used two different services at the same time. The top five most used platforms on the Czech market have long included Netflix, Voyo, Max, Disney+, and prima+. They are followed by Amazon Prime Video, SkyShowtime, Canal+, and Apple TV+. This was reported by the representative office of thematic stations Atmedia.
The most searched genres on streaming services include comedy, crime, action and adventure films and series, family stories, as well as titles from the world of science fiction and fantasy.
"The popularity of individual genres varies across different streaming services. For example, sci-fi and fantasy are most often sought after by viewers on global VOD platforms, while family films are mainly watched on local platforms," said Michaela Suráková, managing director of Atmedia, referring to the results of the Atmedia index survey for the second half of last year.
Significant differences are also evident in the choice of origin of the content watched. Users of domestic platforms such as Voyo or Prima+ most often watch Czech films and series, including original content produced by these services. Approximately half of their users prefer local titles. "Local streaming services often base their offerings on domestic productions, which is their main competitive advantage over global players," adds Michaela Suráková. On the other hand, users of global VOD services such as Netflix, Max, and Disney+ are most interested in these services' original productions and foreign titles. Approximately half of users seek out original content here.
68% of viewers tune in to television every day
Despite the emergence of new platforms, television broadcasting remains the most widespread means of consuming video content. A total of 92% of Czech households watch television content. Every day, 68% of viewers aged 15+ turn on the television, spending an average of 3 hours and 36 minutes watching it.
Overall, films and series have long been among the most watched genres on television stations. According to official TV audience measurement data, they account for 44% of total viewership among viewers aged 15+. Series are more popular.
Local content is popular in the Czech Republic
In terms of the origin of films and series, local productions have long been the most popular on television stations. Of the total time spent watching films and series, 42% is devoted to Czech titles, followed by North American and European films and series. "Local films and series are also increasingly finding their way into the programming of paid film and series channels, which viewers can find in the same way as streaming services in the offerings of pay-TV operators," says Suráková. "For example, the most-watched film last year on FilmBox Stars was the comedy Bábovky." Czech and Czechoslovak films were also among the most watched programs last year on FilmBox, including the comedies 2Bobule and Prvok, Šampón, Tečka a Karel.
