A CAROUSEL OF MONEY CALLED THE SUPER BOWL. THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR A SEAT, MILLIONS FOR ADS

The final game in American football, the famous Super Bowl is probably the most watched sports game ever. And the price of advertising matches it. But famous artists performing at halftime get nothing.

America's biggest sporting event of the year - the Super Bowl - takes place on February 9. The Philadelphia Eagles face the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in the American football final. The game includes a half-time show featuring contemporary music star rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched televised sporting events in the world. Viewership is estimated at 90 million viewers (not only from the USA). Such interest naturally attracts huge amounts of money.

Super Bowl halftime breaks are probably the most desirable media space for TV advertisers ever. The average cost of a 30-second spot regularly runs into the millions of dollars, and some spots are produced specifically and exclusively for this moment.

Many viewers also often watch the Super Bowl not so much for the sport, but for the singer or songstress performing at halftime. They receive no gratuity because their 13-minute slot is a huge promotion and recognition for them.

One area where huge sums of money are made is of course the money from ticket sales, which are not cheap. This year, the price of a single seat is between $2,000 - $10,000 (about 49,000 - 243,000 CZK). According to the British BBC, the most expensive seat cost $52,079 (1.26 million crowns).

More money comes from advertising. According to an Ipsos FastFacts study from December 2024, three out of four people watching the game said they watch the ads included in the broadcast. Eleven percent of people even watch the Super Bowl just for them.

In total, companies have purchased over 10 commercials for this year's game, at a cost of $8 million ($193 million) per ad. A 30-second spot has thus gone down in price by a million dollars since the previous Seper Bowl. The broadcaster of the game, Fox Corp, was already in talks with investors in the spring of 2024, for example, reports CNBC. It is believed that the price of the unit will rise precisely because of "the companies' appetite for a commercial break".

But of course, the commercial itself is more expensive; in addition to the money for the broadcast, it has to be produced first, and the biggest and therefore most expensive celebrities are often featured in special Super Bowl ads.

Large companies such as Hellmann's, Budweiser and Doritos are among the repeat clients. For the very first time, a Super Bowl commercial was made by the delivery service Instacart.

Teams that pay their players also put money into the event. According to CBS Sports, the offensive players get the most money, with the Kansas City team getting just over a hundred thousand dollars. For the Philadelphia Eagles, it's about half that.
