ATMEDIA: PAY TV IS GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE, CZECHS SPEND 419 CZK PER MONTH FOR IT
19. 11. 202419. 11. 2024The average monthly spending of Czechs on pay TV has risen to 419 CZK this year, as several operators have increased the price of their services. This price is now considered too high by up to one-third of TV viewers, who so far exclusively use free digital terrestrial broadcasting. This is according to the current research atmedia index, which is regularly conducted by Atmedia, a company representing thematic TV stations.
The average monthly amount spent by TV viewers on pay-TV operators' services increased by 7% year-on-year to CZK 419 per month in the second and third quarters of this year.
However, despite price increases, the number of TV viewers using pay TV has been growing in recent years. "Our Atmedia Index research data shows the growth of IPTV in particular," says Pavel Müller, Senior Head of Research & Marketing at Atmedia.
The most frequently cited reason for using pay TV is the ability to watch back TV shows. The ability to watch TV shows on multiple devices simultaneously or the ability to watch TV stations that are not available on free digital terrestrial broadcasting also plays an important role.
Despite the growth of pay TV in recent years, a large number of Czech TV viewers still make do with free-to-air TV channels. "Our atmedia index research shows that almost one third of them do not want to pay for receiving TV stations or find pay TV too expensive. Therefore, we asked these more price-sensitive viewers how much they would be willing to pay for pay TV," said Pavel Müller, adding that the research shows that the price ranges from 150 to 200 CZK. For that amount, viewers would like access to a service that offers more than 100 TV stations, more than 70 of them in HD quality, the ability to rewatch and record TV shows, or the ability to watch video content on four devices simultaneously.
More pay-TV operators have targeted price-sensitive customers this year - for example, the new Pecka.TV service or Skylink with its TV+ package.
