The share of local productions, i.e. Czech or Czechoslovak productions, in the broadcasts of the Czech Television, Prima and Nova television groups has accounted for 41% of all broadcasts in the last five years. However, the share of local programmes in viewership has been much higher in the long term, accounting for up to 60%. This was stated by the professional association ATO on the occasion of World Television Day on Monday. The data is based on ATO-Nielsen Admopshere TV viewership measurements.
Viewers are interested in Czech-produced programmes. This is evidenced by the viewership data of Czech Television, Nova and Prima and their most successful series of 2022: for example, the most watched episode of this year's series Ninety (CT) had over 2.4 million viewers over the age of 15, the most successful episode of Police Modrava (Nova) was watched by almost 1.8 million viewers and the most watched episode of ZOO (Prima) had 1.45 million viewers.
Serials and sitcoms (as the genres with generally the largest share of airtime and also the largest share of viewership) are 16% represented by local productions on the stations of the three main TV groups. However, the share of Czech series in total viewing is several times higher, at 45%. Similarly, for films, plays and drama, which as genres have the second largest share of airtime and viewership overall, local productions account for 37% of viewership. In the case of entertainment programmes, Czech programmes account for as much as 91% of the audience share - however, they also (unlike series and films) have a high share of local production determined by the broadcast itself. Unsurprisingly, almost 100% of the audience share of Czech programmes is accounted for by news, with foreign productions appearing on the screens of the three main TV groups in only 0.4% of the airtime.
"It is clear that Czech viewers find domestic production authentic, relevant and able to bring them to their TV screens in the long term,"
comments Petr Miláček, Director of Analysis at TV Prima.
Last year, TV viewership was at a record high of 4 hours and 2 minutes, more than 20 minutes more than a decade ago.
"The quality and variety of programming also played a significant role. The track record confirms the fact that television is still a very strong medium in our country,"
added Vlasta Roškotová, CEO of the ATO.
