CZECH LION AWARD: BEST SERIES VOLHA, MINISERIES MATHEMATICS OF CRIME
9. 3. 20249. 3. 2024The prize for the best television series at this year's Czech Lion Film Awards went to the series Volha, which brings together clips from normalised Czechoslovak television in the 1970s and 1980s and was broadcast by Czech Television last spring. The series also scored points in other categories. The actor Kryštof Hádek won the award for best male actor in a leading role for his role as the egocentric Stanislav Pekárek. Actor Tomáš Jeřábek was awarded for the best male actor in a supporting role. In addition, Volha also has awards for best costumes and best masks.
In the category called Best TV Movie or Miniseries, the Czech Lion goes to the TV Nova group and Voyo for the three-part series Matematika zločinu directed by Peter Bebjak. This is the first Czech Lion for original drama in the history of Nova TV. The miniseries was made for Voyo by the production company DNA Production. Matematika zločinu tells the story of journalist Magdalena Sodomkova (Lucie Štěpánková), who is written out of an Indonesian prison by Tomáš Toman (Jan Nedbal). He was arrested while fleeing from Czech justice and claims that he did not commit the crime for which he was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison.
The Czech Lion for Best Feature Film of 2023 went to Brothers, directed by Tomáš Mašín. The film tells the story of the resistance group of the Mašín brothers and their escape to West Berlin.
The Czech Lion for outstanding contribution to Czech cinema was awarded to cinematographer Vladimír Smutný during the gala evening at the Rudolfinum in Prague.
