"Czechs certainly do not lack confidence when cooking. More than half of people, 56 per cent of respondents, are convinced that they could appear in a TV cooking show if they were given the chance," says Erika Luzsicza, director of Axocom, adding that kitchen lovers prefer to cook new recipes according to TV (78 per cent of them), while only 22 per cent of them make do on their own with a cookbook in hand.
Popular shows such as Bake the Whole Country, MasterChef or Prostřeno have been adopted from abroad and have become an integral part of the Czech television programme. "The popularity of the gastro scene is also evident when looking at the offer of streaming platforms, where dozens more series or films with this theme are on offer," Luzsicza said, adding that the popularity of Czech shows goes far beyond the domestic scene, as 41 percent of viewers admit that they also like to watch foreign shows or video bloggers. Another third of viewers admit to having at least one cookbook at home.
The survey also shows in an interesting way how Czechs perceive their own cooking. 72 per cent of people believe they have at least one recipe they know perfectly and are not afraid to treat visitors or relatives with it. On the contrary, only 28 percent of respondents avoid cooking altogether and leave it to others or eat cold food.
"People see good cooking and hospitality as motivation - 60 per cent of respondents like to invite visitors to their homes. Of these, 45 per cent are then delighted when someone compliments them on a good meal. A full quarter then dream of owning their own cooking business,"
adds Luzsicza.
An interesting fact to conclude is that 38 per cent of the audience is not afraid to experiment when it comes to flavours and new ingredients. If they find a recipe inspiring enough, they are willing to seek out ingredients they haven't eaten at all or use little.
