More than a quarter of the Czech population thinks that the use of AI in journalism is positive. But four in ten are convinced otherwise. People under 44 are also more likely to see AI in journalism as positive. This is according to the third wave of a sociological survey conducted by Ipsos in cooperation with the Department of Journalism at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, supported by the Czech Technology Agency.
Compared to the second wave in October 2023, positive perceptions of AI in journalism have increased slightly (by 5 percentage points to 27%), while negative perceptions have remained almost the same (42%). Nevertheless, negative perceptions still outweigh positive ones. At the same time, ambivalent attitudes decreased between the second and third waves to 31% (neither positive nor negative).
Q24a. Do you consider the use of AI tools in journalism and news media (e.g. in generating articles, videos, graphics, personalising content, etc.) to be positive or negative?;
Similar to the last wave, just under half of people do not know that AI can write articles instead of journalists in Czech. The other half of the population has heard at least some information about this phenomenon. Young people under the age of 34 have heard the most about AI in journalism.
At the same time, in the third wave, there were more Czechs who would choose news created by AI. But the majority (nearly three-quarters of Czechs) still prefer the work of human journalists to AI. But their share is declining slightly over time. Even in the current wave, the preference for having a human moderator read the news prevails.
Compared to the last wave, there are more people who registered artificially generated images in Czech media and the robot Jana on the Seznam Zprávy website, among others, digital writers of Czech Radio.
If you had to decide whether to subscribe to free news created by artificial intelligence, or computer algorithms, or human journalists, which type would you choose?
The use of artificial intelligence platforms is generally increasing in the Czech population. ChatGPT has been tried by a third of the population, and is more frequently used in work tasks. Czechs are increasingly aware that AI is entering their everyday lives. Almost half of the population has negative expectations of AI, and there are concerns about the decline of communication and possible misuse.
About the research
The research was carried out on a representative sample of the country's Internet population over the age of 15. A total of 1,232 respondents participated. The research was conducted using the Ipsos online panel Populace.cz and took place in April 2024. Previous waves were conducted in October 2023 and November 2023. The report is part of the TQ01000100 Newsroom AI project, supported by TAČR under the SIGMA programme.
