21. 11. 202421. 11. 2024The highest average TV viewing time per person so far this year was on the first flood weekend on 14 and 15 September 2024, when it rose to 4 hours and 37 minutes. This was, for interest, 75 minutes more than the previous sunny tropical weekend.
The data was published by the Association of Television Organizations, for which the Nielsen agency measures viewership. The viewership measurement also captures viewership of video content on smart TVs or in the HbbTV hybrid broadcasting environment. 57% of Czech households now have at least one TV set connected to the internet.
The average weekly TV reach in the 15+ target group from January to October was 85%, and the average daily reach was 67%. Viewership data over the last year also shows the importance of delayed viewing of films and series. People tend to watch these genres retrospectively after they have been broadcast live, known as 'delayed viewing'. Average delayed viewing in the first three days after broadcast was 11% in 2024 (January-October) in the 15+ target group. However, live broadcasting remains essential for watching sports and news, and for some, political debates or reality shows.
For example, the StarDance episodes broadcast so far on CT1 were seen by an average of 1.8 million viewers over 4 years old, with a postponed viewing rate of 15%. The crime drama Angel on Nova was watched by an average of 1.2 million people, with a postponed viewing rate of 14%. And Prima' s series Na vlnách Jadran (On the Waves of the Adriatic) attracted an average of 1.1 million viewers, with a 14% postponed viewership.
The World Cup final on 26 May 2024 was an extraordinary success with viewers. 3.5 million people over the age of 4 watched the Switzerland-Czech Republic match on CT Sport, with only 2% of viewers having delayed viewing. 278,000 people watched via the internet, including apps on smart TVs.
World Television Day traditionally falls on 21 November. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1996. It will also be marked by the Association of Commercial Television Stations: Nova, Prima and Óčko have prepared a joint TV spot featuring a selection of the best commercial stations have to offer. It will appear on all the member companies' stations.
