Half of the Czechs are interested, while in the host country interest is lukewarm

The sporting event of the year starts in Paris this Friday. Research by Ipsos in 34 countries has shown significant differences in the level of interest in the Games. People in Asia are most interested in the Games (China 86%, Thailand 77%, Indonesia 75%), while people in Belgium (38%), Japan (40%) and Hungary (44%) are least interested.

In the host country France, interest is rather lukewarm, with less than half of the population interested in games. However, in all countries except Turkey, the level of interest in this year's Games is higher than in the last Summer Games in Tokyo.

In the Czech Republic, interest is rather average, with half of the population (52%) interested in the Games. Men are more interested, and interest also increases with age and education.

Athletics and tennis attract the most

Among specific sporting events, Czechs are most looking forward to watching athletics (34%) and tennis (29%), followed by gymnastics, football, water sports or cycling. Czechs are significantly more interested in watching sport climbing (13% Czech Republic, vs. 3% globally).

Men are more interested in football, while women plan to watch gymnastics and water sports more often.

Globally, football is the most anticipated sporting event (28%) followed by athletics (26%) and gymnastics (20%).

Sports collections appeal especially to young people

This year's sportswear collection of the Czech team was noticed by 71% of the Czech population. 37 per cent of them said they liked the collection, while more than half (59 per cent) disliked it.

"The sports collections appeal especially to the younger generation, who are more open to modern trends. In the 18-26 age group, almost half said they liked the collections. There is no significant difference between men and women," says Jakub Malý, Director of Ipsos.

The majority of respondents also agree that ongoing war conflicts or economic situation, but also the climate crisis (impacts of travel, construction) should not prevent the event from taking place.

7 out of 10 Czechs (vs. 80% globally) say that the Games motivate young people to be active in sport. However, only 34% of Czechs (vs. 55% globally) say they are personally motivated to play active sports.
