Netflix remains the most used video-on-demand (VOD) service in the Czech Republic. It is followed by Voyo as the strongest local service. Prima+ has reached a comparable share to Disney+.

The strongest VOD service on the Czech market remains Netflix. It is accessed by 68% of households using the streaming service. This is according to the newly published research by NMS Market Research, whose findings were published jointly with Association of Mobile Network Operators. According to the research, the other Voyo is present in 44% of households. Third is Disney+ (26%), but its share is almost the same as prime+ (25%).

The research also showed that two-thirds of Czech households watch video content via the internet. The internet is the main source of video content viewing for the younger generation. In the 25-34 age group, 57% of young people cite it as their main source. This is more than double the percentage of the 65+ age group, where 26% of viewers prefer the internet as a source of video content. The Internet accounts for 41% of total TV time, according to the research. This is 31% for DVB-T2 and 23% for satellite and cable.

"As the current younger generation gradually ages and watching video content over the internet becomes the main way of viewing, this will mean dramatically higher demands for data transmission over mobile and fixed data networks," said Jiri Grund, president of the Association of Mobile Network Operators.

The importance of the Internet has also grown year-on-year, according to the research. On the main TV screen in the home, the share of programmes watched over the internet has risen from 35% in 2023 to 41% today. This increase is mainly driven by the growing popularity of IPTV services, while interest in HbbTV has declined slightly, according to the research.

76% of households are expected to pay for content. This applies to streaming services, IPTV, cable, satellite and ad-free viewing. The internet as a source of video content varies by type of show. For example, one-fifth of the shows watched on the main TV screen in the home are news, and there DVB-T2 antenna slightly outweighs the Internet as a source. Conversely, for foreign series, the internet wins as a source of video content on the main TV screen.
