SATELLITE IS STRONGER IN VILLAGES, IPTV IN CITIES AND IN YOUNGER HOUSEHOLDS

Continuous research tracking the evolution of domestic TV households over the long term shows that satellite reception is more popular in villages, while internet-connected TV is more popular in cities. However, terrestrial reception remains the strongest.

Data from the Continuous Research Project PCEM, released on Monday by the Association of Television Organisations (ATO), shows a significant difference in the representation of satellite reception in municipalities with up to 5,000 inhabitants (20%) on the one hand and cities with over 100,000 inhabitants (only 3%) on the other.

The reason for this, according to the ATO, may be the better offer of IPTV and cable operators in cities and probably also the greater freedom in placing the satellite "dish" on the facade or roof of the family house compared to the apartment buildings prevailing in cities.

However, terrestrial reception is the strongest type of TV signal reception in all types of household size studied. It ranges from 40% in small villages to 45% in cities.

At the same time, the representation of internet-connected television (IPTV) receivers is highest (83%) among households with children under 14, followed by households with members aged 25-44, and further decreases with increasing age. Among households where all members are over 65 years old, it is still only 28%. However, in the long term, the share of IPTV is increasing in all groups.

The data also show that while single individuals make do with one TV set in 82% of cases, in the group of households with three or more members there are two or more TV sets in 47% of cases and even three or more in 16% of cases.

The increasing penetration of internet-connected TV sets and the growth of IPTV reception are behind the growing importance of delayed TV viewing. Between May and August 2024, the TV screen belonged to three major sporting events (World Cup, European Football Championship, Olympic Games), whose broadcasts, like any sporting event, viewers prefer to watch live. Nevertheless, in the period of these four months, the 15+ target group saw a year-on-year increase in the share of three-day delayed viewing on TV in total viewing (live + TS 0-3) from 9.7% to 10.8%.

In the same year-on-year comparison and for the same target group, there is also a slight increase in total TV viewing from 3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 11 minutes (live + TS 0-3). The station ČT Sport improved the most, but also Prima love, Nova Lady, Nova Action, Seznam.cz TV, TV Barrandov and ČT recorded a year-on-year increase. The total measured viewership of TV broadcasts and programmes on the internet (web players, mobile apps, HbbTV, Smart TV apps) also grew year-on-year, thanks to a significant increase in live viewership on the internet.
