For example, mobile device controlled casting on TV sets now account for 6% of streaming TV viewing, with game consoles at the same 6% share. Gaming consoles are down from 26% in 2015.
A major part of this comes from 18- to-24-year-old viewers, who now account for a 17% share of streaming through mobile TV and personal computer devices.
All this is part of an overall migration of eliminating so-called TV-related “bridge” devices when it comes to streaming TV -- those separate set top box/sticks also known as ‘streaming media players.’
Aluma says those players continue to drift lower -- now accounting for 21% of streaming viewing.
At the same time, smart TV sets that incorporate streaming app technology into their devices continue to dominate and grow, representing 50% share of streaming viewing. Legacy pay TV set-top boxes -- cable and satellite separate box equipment -- come in just under streaming media players with a 9% share -- matching the share of mobile/PC use.
Currently, 18- to-34 year-olds have a 15% share of overall streaming viewing on game console platforms. Only 1% of streaming viewing on consoles occurs with those 65 years and older.
