INTEREST IN THE NEWS ON SMARTPHONES INCREASED IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
18. 11. 202118. 11. 2021Over the last three years, people’s interest in consuming the news online on smartphones, tablets or e-readers has grown by nearly 20 percent. According to the Media Project research for the second and third quarters of 2021, this form of daily news consumption is attractive for 5.8 million people (66%) aged 12-79 in the Czech Republic. This has been an increase of about 800 thousand people since 2018.
In absolute terms, online news viewing on mobile phones, tablets and e-readers is the highest in the category of 30-39s. In terms of age group distribution in the population of the Czech Republic, this type of viewing is stronger namely among people up to 50 years, then it decreases with age. People with university and secondary education (completed by a school-leaving examination) prevail.
The higher news rating on smartphones relates to the wider spread of the devices in the Czech population. Over three years, the penetration of smartphones increased to 78.5%, which is nearly 7 million people aged 12-79, shows the Media Project research.

The daily consumption of the news published by online newspapers and magazines on smartphones or tablets and e-readers has increased by more than a fifth over the last three years in the Czech Republic. The news service is consumed daily by 2 million people aged 12-79 (24%). Additional nearly two million people in aggregate consume the news several times a week or at least once a week. In absolute terms, the most frequent consumers are people aged 30-49 and the consumption is also high in the 20-29 and 50-59 age groups.
