THEME OF THE MONTH: ENTERTAINMENT TV FORMATS

The first of July is International Day of Jokes. Humour on the TV screen belongs not only to this one day, but it appears in the programme offer all year round. It is because one of the reasons, why viewers watch television, is that entertaining function and ability of helping them to get away from the worries of everyday life. Entertainment formats are therefore among the most popular on television screens.

As people generally have more free time in the summer, they also like to spend it in front of the TV screen. Every viewer in the Czech Republic over the age of four watched an average of almost 3 hours of TV a day last summer.

Positive, romantic and cult programmes are generally popular during the summer months.

On the main Prima station, these are traditionally the comedies Slunce, seno a pár facek or Slunce, seno, jahody; the Crocodile Dundee series or the Vinnetou and Old Shatterhand films. Among entertainment TV formats, the popular summer TV show on Prima is Máme rádi Česko (We Like the Czech Republic).

In general, viewers also watch smaller thematic channels more in summer, and of the smaller stations of the TV Prima group, Prima Love is the most popular in summer. In August last year, Prima Love achieved a record monthly share of 2.99%. For example, the film Rosamunde Pilcher: A Father’s Legacy was seen by 229,000 viewers on 7 July 2022.

On TV Nova, the audience in the target group of 15-54 years old, as during the year, watches mainly Czech drama, popular series and films (Jak vytrhnout velrybě stoličku/Malý pitaval z velkého města/Chalupáři). In the top shows for the wider target group 4+ there is even more emphasis on Czech productions and foreign titles are kept to a minimum.

Even commercials are not afraid of a joke. In ScreenVoice MAGAZINE, read which commercials are among the funniest thanks to their well-crafted punchlines.
